Scotland Triumphs Over Donald Trump's Twitter, Approves Giant Offshore Wind Farm

The future is coming, whether Donald Trump is ready for it or not. The Scottish government just formally announced that it will be building a massive experimental offshore wind farm in the North Sea. This despite the myriad and obnoxious protestations of the loud-mouthed millionaire, who claims the turbines would infringe upon the view from one of his luxury hotels.

Scotland is intent on becoming a world leader in clean energy generation, and the new project will see 11 towering turbines set adrift off the coast of northern Scotland. Together, they would be able to generate 100 megawatts of power—enough to keep the lights on in nearly 100,000 homes. Alas, Donald Trump did not much like the prospect of windmills being visible from the golf course from his hotel. When the proposal was first announced, he proceeded to get into a memorable spat with the Scottish government.

“If you pursue this goal of building these monsters all over Scotland, Scotland will go broke,” he said. When pressed for supporting evidence, he retorted that “I am the evidence. I am an expert at tourism. I have won many awards."

Shortly after that, Trump's hyperactive Twitter feed would routinely be filled with a cascade of anti-wind power sentiments. Denouncing the clean energy source—which, coincidentally was booming as a global industry—became something of a crusade, as he promised to use all of the resources at his disposal to prevent the turbines from ever getting built.

Wind turbines are a scourge to communities and wildlife. They are environmental disasters.

Trump was even once widely believed to be behind an effort to stage an anti-wind demonstration outside the British embassy in New York City, but plans for the event were scuttled after the press got wind of the Craigslist ad offering to pay people $20 an hour to pretend to be protesters.

Alas, his mighty efforts have amounted to naught. The government approved the plans today, and Trump was predictably incensed.

"We will put our future plans in Aberdeen on hold, as will many others, until this ridiculous proposal is defeated," Trump said, according to the Guardian. "Likewise, we will be bringing a lawsuit within the allocated period of time to stop what will definitely be the destruction of Aberdeen and Scotland itself."

But Trump is alone in his outrage. As if to drive the point home, the online community's gleeful schadenfreude immediately catapaulted the story of the wind farm's approval to the top of Reddit. A user named Karstein currently has the top-voted comment regarding Trump's threats, writing, simply: "If my sources are correct, he can go fuck himself."
