Apple Stands Atop the (Very Small) Smartwatch Mountain

New product categories take a while to catch on.

Apple still won't tell us exactly how many units of the Apple Watch it's moved, but the latest estimates covering Q2 2015 from the research firm Strategy Analytics suggest the company is outright dominating the smartwatch business. There's just one small wrinkle: the business is still pretty small.

Let's take a quick look at the numbers:

  • Estimated number of Apple Watches sold in Q2: 4 million

  • Estimated total number of smartwatches sold in Q2: 5.3 million

  • Apple's percentage of the smartwatch business: 75

  • Number of iPhones sold in same timeframe: 47.5 million
