Developer Capcom today announced that it will remake its classic PlayStation horror game Resident Evil 2.

The company didn't say what platforms it will release the game on or what kind of effort will go into remaking it, but judging by the tentative title, "Resident Evil 2 Remake" and the fanfare around the announcement, it's safe to assume that it will resemble the remake of the first Resident Evil.

Originally released on Nintendo's GameCube in 2002, the remake of the original Resident Evil wasn't just the same game at a higher resolution (like so many other re-releases we see these days), but a meticulous recreation of the original with brand new, modern art assets.

"You've been telling us for years that you want Resident Evil 2 to be remade," Capcom's Producer for the title, Yoshiaki Hirabyashi said in the announcement video. "We at R&D Division 1 [the Capcom studio developing the remake] will do our best to take on your feedback and deliver the gameplay experience you've been waiting for."

The first Resident Evil was a true game changer, establishing many survival-horror tropes that are still used in games today, but Resident Evil 2 refined them well, and is considered by many to be a high point for the series.

Hopefully, Resident Evil 2 gets the same treatment.
