Meet the Woman Who Saved 5,000 Hedgehogs

Joan Lockley sets up her own hedgehog hospital.

Fifteen years ago, Joan Lockley saved one injured hedgehog in her backyard in Cheslyn Hay in the West Midlands of England. Since then, she estimates she has cared for around 5,000.

"Everybody loves hedgehogs," Lockley said in a BBC video. "I don't know anybody who doesn't love hedgehogs."

Lockley received an award this week from the International Fund for Animal Welfare for her work at the West Midlands Hedgehog Rescue and the "Hedgehog Hosprickal" she started.

She travels "almost daily" to nearby clinics to pick up sick and abandoned hedgehogs, the BBC reported, and saves about 500 of them a year.

Taking care of the hedgehog takes up most time of her days, Lockley said, which means she relies on public donations to support the amateur hedgehog clinic.

"She will absolutely do anything for them, at any time of the day," one of her friends told the BBC. "She will travel to anywhere in the country, and she will do whatever it takes."
