It's like the 'PostSecret' of voice messages.

"Tell me your secret. Leave your secret after the tone."

So intones the voice on the other end of (347) 470-0246. Need to get something off your chest? A deep, dark secret perhaps? Give that number a ring, follow the prompt. Welcome to Secret Voicemail Project.

It's an apt title for something billed as allowing "strangers to connect through anonymous voicemail messages." (Remember those?) Think of it as PostSecret, only exclusively audio messages.

It's hard to tell here what's legit and what's mere trollery. Is that message—which, after multiple listens, I gather says: "Today I found out my sister killed my mother"—a real secret?

In this sense, Secret Voicemail Project is basically the Reddit hotline. So it should come to little surprise that the majority of "secret" voicemails as of this writing are seemingly from mouth-breathing dudes whose confessions cluster around either masturbating:

It's intriguing and tragic stuff, albeit demanding to be taken with a heaping grain of salt. But it's that overhanging uncertainty—which confessions are in fact real secrets?—that makes Secret Voicemail Project, which appears, based on upload times, to be just a few days old, a bonafide Internet Blackhole.

Never mind the death of the answering machine.
