The 'Spyro' Remaster Trailer Makes It Look Like the Cartoon You Imagined as a Child

The ’Spyro: Reignited Trilogy’ trailer makes the old games look new and lands on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in September.

In the late 1990s, a plucky purple dragon swooped onto the PlayStation and into our hearts. His name was Spyro, and he filled a Mario-sized hole in Sony’s flagship video game console. Over the next few years, Spryo flew and breathed fire through two sequels then retired to the island of misfit video game mascots, probably to torment Bubsy. Sure, he appeared in some Skylanders titles, but it wasn't the same.

Today, Activision announced the remastered version of Spyro’s original three adventures is coming to both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy will include all three of original games fully remastered.

This isn’t a quick port either, but a complete graphic overhaul. I’m cynical about remakes, but the new Spyro looks incredible. The purple dragon was always supposed to invoke a kid’s cartoon, and the new remaster makes him look as if he’s ready for the Saturday morning block.

According to Activision, the game will faithfully recreate the original levels, but update the control scheme, add new rewards, and “reimagined” music. Tom Kenny—best known as the voice of Spongebob Squarepants and Professor Lsdtrails—is returning to reprise his role as the cartoon dragon. We’re just going to pretend the Elijah Wood Spyro didn’t happen.

Spyro: Reignited Trilogy will launch on September 21 and cost $40.
