“Open Condom Style” is Now Your Weird K-Pop Summer Jam

As you begin to prepare for this weekend’s debaucheries, you’ll want to check out “Gangnam Style,” the newest single released by South Korea’s OG Oppa, Park Jae-Sang. Going by the stage name PSY, Park demonstrates that he too can keep up with the pop music industry’s shift towards electronic, computerized beats, including a back track that is quite reminiscent of LMFAO’s equally hilarious “Party Rock Anthem.” But it’s not only the addictive, repetitive, and uppity dance beat that’s made this song go viral; the video that accompanies “Oppa Gangnam Style,” or what many commenters decipher as “open condom style” is one of a kind.

Once you get past all the shiny suits, rodeo-style dance offs, and safety-first duck boats, you may ask what this guy’s actually singing about. Quest no more, you rage fiend you: PSY simply longs for a girl who’s a lady in the streets but a freak in the sheets, and attempts to win her over by referring to himself, the Oppa, as a guy who’s got said temperament, has “bulging ideas rather than muscles,” and aspires to live “Gangnam style,” ie, in one of the most affluent regions of Seoul, with the classy ladies who inhabit it. But “Gangnam” is also a state of mind, one that for better or worse you’re not going to leave easily.
