As people receive iTunes gift cards for the holidays and wonder silently, "What am I going to do with this?", savvy app developers are discounting their products. MacStories has collected an extensive list of what's on sale that will be continuously updated as more iOS and OS X apps are added to the sales. Here are some of the best and worst picks, in my entirely subjective opinion.

Good: Star Walk: Astronomy Guide to the Night Sky

One of those apps that reminds you not only how useful mobile technology can be, but how it can induce wonder. Star Walk helps you keep abreast of what's going on in your patch of night sky, and shows you what exactly it is you're looking at. One glowing review says, "I can just stand outside looking around the sky, even without a telescope, and feel like I'm being introduced to friends." That's… beautiful.

Both Star Walk and Star Walk HD have been discounted from $2.99 to $0.99.

Good: 1Password (for Mac)

1Password's price has been reduced from $49.99 to $31.99, which is worth it for a safe, reliable password generator that keeps all your passwords behind one login. As the app's description points out, "Every day there are new passwords to remember. If you create new ones, they are often forgotten. If you use the same passwords over and over again, you become vulnerable. 1Password solves all these problems." Most people's passwords are variations on a theme, so if someone gets ahold of just one, you could be screwed. Protect ya neck.

Good: Final Fantasy I-VII

You can now own the first seven Final Fantasy games, plus Final Fantasy IV: The After Years and Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, for the low, low price of $65 (normally $125). Play these under the table at Christmas dinner while your aunts ask you about your love life. (The fact that you're playing Final Fantasy under the table should answer the question.)

What? Why?: WaterMinder

Yeah, we know it's important to drink lots of water. But do you really need an app to remind you to do it? It's pretty easy—when you're thirsty, drink water as opposed to something else. This neat trick pretty much guarantees you'll be properly hydrated. But considering that WaterMinder now only costs $0.99, which is less than a bottle of Poland Spring, go right ahead.
