Apple Propels Dr. Dre’s ‘Compton’ to Second Place on Billboard Charts

Dre’s final album was beaten out by a country singer, but it’s still a success for a relatively small and quickly growing streaming service.

Compton, Dr. Dre's third and final album that was exclusively available on Apple Music and iTunes for two weeks earlier this month, has landed at the number two spot on the Billboard Top 200.

The album was streamed 25 million times on Apple Music and had almost half a million purchased downloads in the first week of its release. That compares somewhat favorably with two previous Apple-exclusive albums: Beyoncé, released in December 2013, had just as many downloads in its first 24 hours and Drake's If You're Reading This, It's Too Late, released in February, became the first album to sell a million copies in 2015.

The New York Times notes that the album likely benefited from the promotional push from the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton.

Apple Music, in its nascent stages, is now in the spotlight, making much higher growth than Spotify did in its early months as a relatively unknown variable. The service has netted 11 million trial members, but how many of those will convert to subscribers remains to be seen.

It couldn't quite make #1 on Billboard, but maybe it's just enough that Apple was able to roll it out with some flair. At the very least, it can't get any worse than poor Tidal.
