Japan’s Incredibly Complex Underground Bicycle Storage System

Kryptonite locks were just disrupted.

Japan has a bike storage system that people in Brooklyn can only dream about.

Introducing the Eco Cycle Anti-Seismic Underground Bicycle Park, an intricate automated system that stores bikes underground. As the video above shows, the bike enters a street-level elevator where it is then transported into the depths of the Earth and stored.

"The environmentally-friendly design allows for fairly easy deinstallation, should public demand for safe, subterranean bike parking wane," writes Open Culture. The blog adds that it's protected against earthquakes too. (We should note that the system, and mind-boggling videos of it, have been around since 2008.)

We just hope there's a backup power generator in case of an emergency.
