It sort of looks like the surface of Mars.

If there's one thing we've all got in common, it's blood. It sits right at the base of our bodily hierarchy of needs—vital and, in many circumstances, hazardous.

That's what makes fresh blood under 400x magnification, which is what we're seeing here, so arresting. It's another example of the power of microscopy, or the fine art of making the invisible visible. It sort of looks like the surface of Mars. It sort of looks, well, beautiful? In a morbid, sinister sense.

What could be more elemental that that? Easy: blood at 1000x magnification.
