Watch This Very Cute Solution for Typing in VR

Cutie Keys is a dang sweet drum kit for virtual reality typing.

Typing in virtual reality is a pain in the ass. If you're using an Oculus Rift, you have to scoot the headset off of your face to find your real-life keyboard, and pray that your skills are good enough to manage typing blind from there.

The VR software designers at Normal developed the most adorable solution to typing in a virtual space. They call it Cutie Keys, and it is cute as heck.

Embodied by a happy little alien, you'll drum away on a virtual keyboard, using VR hand controllers as the sticks. The keys scale up and down, and speak the letters in varying tones to match size. Hitting teeny tiny keys sound like stepping on fairies. Gigantic keys sound like deep grumbles.

Normal notes in its blog that the designers were inspired by Google's typewriter-mallet combination interface, which it unveiled at the IO conference last year. Google retired that project to focus on Daydream, leaving good VR typing apps up to the users to make.

The Cutie Keys code is open-source on GitHub, as is the Vive build. Normal wants people playing with this sickeningly sweet typing app, with the addition of different languages, sounds, and features.
