Here's What 'Zelda: Breath of the Wild' Looks Like in 4K

Nintendo's latest hit gets ported to the PC with 4K graphics with the help of the Cemu 1.7.3 emulator.

Earlier this week we contacted the team leader of the Cemu Wii U emulator for the PC, and discussed in detail how he'd gotten the critically acclaimed Switch and Wii U game The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild working for PC just a few days after release. And now, thanks to a video from YouTube's YamGaming, we can now see what the first fruits of those efforts look like in practice. In many respects, it's a beauty, and the inclusion of a 4K graphics pack with Cemu marks a clear step up from Nintendo's graphically inferior consoles.

As the video above shows, though, it's currently a bit trashy when it comes to performance. "Exzap," Cemu's project head, warned as much in our interview. The stylized details look breathtaking compared to their counterparts on the Switch, but Link shuffles along at a stomach-turning 15 frames per second or less. Bugs abound, including missing textures, a near total absence of Breath of the Wild's lovely grass, and Link's tendency to sink halfway into the landscape.

Yet considering that the game only came out last week, that's a stunning turnaround time for a jump to a PC emulator. And considering that the team behind Cemu managed to get Xenoblade Chronicles X working fine on PCs even with 4K resolution, it may only be a matter of months before PC players can (admittedly illegitimately) enjoy the latest Zelda game in its full glory.

"The goal is to get every game running 100% eventually," Exzap said our interview earlier in the week. "How we get there and how long it will take is difficult to answer. But in regards to [Breath of the Wild], I think we will see small incremental improvements in almost every future Cemu release. It's been this way for most other games so far."
