Catch the Guerrilla Premiere of Fight for the Future's Anti-NSA Video, Starring Evangeline Lilly

Tomorrow night in Washington Square Park, help support the privacy fight on the streets.

Tomorrow evening, a public "guerrilla" screening of a five-minute video detailing the NSA's various surveillance programs is set to launch at New York City's Washington Square Park. Evangeline Lilly, star of Lost and The Hobbit, narrates the film, which was produced by Fight for the Future and Demand Progress.

The Illuminator, a roving van equipped with audio and video projection equipment, as well as an infoshop and mini-library, will be projecting the video onto the side of a building. According to a press release, "the event is being used to educate New Yorkers and encourage them to attend the Stop Watching Us Rally Against Mass Surveillance."

"We've been making educational videos about internet freedom works since before the big SOPA fight," said Fight for the Future campaign manager Evan Greer. "We made a video about SOPA/PIPA, which kind of became one of the definitive pieces on that topic, getting about 7 million views. It really helped change the conversation on that bill.

"So, when the NSA revelations came out, we launched the Indiegogo campaign, saying we'd like to make a definitive video about this issue, in order to get into the complexities of privacy and freedom of the press," he said.

The organizers ultimately raised nearly $8,000 to not only produce the video, but launch it in a seriously public way. And the team didn't just want to publish the video online; they wanted to make splash outside of cyberspace, sending a message to those in power that people aren't about to let their right to privacy be trampled.

Lilly, a vocal supporter of Fight for the Future and, more broadly, internet and press freedom issues, reached out to the team behind the NSA surveillance video.

"The NSA and its defenders have been lying to us and twisting their words to distort the facts," Greer said. "This video is an opportunity to educate ordinary people about how government spying programs really work, and the threat that they pose to our basic rights to privacy and freedom of speech.”

Greer says that the goal was to produce a video that people could send to their "apolitical cousin" to help them understand the issue, whether or not they think they have something to hide.

"My hope is that if any authorities show up, they will enjoy watching all five minutes of it," said Greer when asked how he expects officials to react to the guerrilla screening. If the fuzz does shut down The Illuminator's project unit, things could get interesting.

Free bags of popcorn will be handed out to the crowd, while volunteers will encourage attendees to sign up to ride buses down to Washington D.C. for the rally on October 26th. Though the exact location hasn't yet been revealed, organizers are asking that people gather at The Arch at 9 PM.
