Huh, 'Beyond Good & Evil 2' Is Starting to Look Like a Real Video Game

After years of rumors, the sequel to the cult classic finally looks like it might be real.

Fifteen years ago, Ubisoft released Beyond Good & Evil to critical acclaim. The video game told the story of Jade, an investigative reporter who used martial arts and a camera to fight against tyranny. It didn’t make much money, but fans fell in love and the game became a cult hit.

Michel Ancel—the game’s creator—long said he imagined the game as part of a trilogy and has spent the past decade-plus dodging questions about a sequel, insinuating that one was possible, and sometimes denying its existence. Last year, Ubisoft revealed a teaser trailer for Beyond Good & Evil 2 and followed it up with some simple gameplay footage.

Ubisoft North America published more gameplay footage today on YouTube and, for the first time, it looks like Beyond Good & Evil 2 is more than just dreams and a rough demo. It’s an actual, honest to god video game. The gameplay video runs just over two minutes, but it shows the development team talking about the game intercut with actual gameplay footage.

This time around—based on what the developers have said so far, at least—players will control a team of pirates as they navigate the stars and form an armada. The new gameplay footage video shows us two different characters (one of which is an ape flying around with a jetpack), co-op gameplay, and an early build of combat.

Although it’s a brief glimpse at what Beyond Good & Evil 2 may hold for players, it’s still the most we’ve seen of the actual game to date and it is undoubtedly starting to shape up.

Here’s hoping it lives up to fifteen years of hype.
