The first-person cyberpunk game Deus Ex is often cited as one of the best games of all time—and today, thanks to a group of dedicated modders, it looks better than ever.Developer Caustic Creative has been working on Deus Ex: Revision for over a year, a mod with new environments, textures, soundtrack, gameplay improvements, and other details to make Deus Ex feel more modern while still staying true to the look and feel of the original game, which was released in 2000.Modders put in an amazing amount of work to improve old games all the time (the fantastic work in the Thief and System Shock 2 modding communities comes to mind), but Deus Ex: Revision is notable for receiving the blessing of Square Enix, the publisher that currently holds the rights to Deus Ex.The publisher said in a press release that it "authorized" the mod, which is available through Steam today for free. If it wasn't free, Square Enix probably wouldn't allow it, as publishers typically don't allow anyone else profit from their intellectual property. You'll need to own the original Deus Ex to play the mod, which Square Enix is conveniently discounting today by 80 percent.If you haven't played it, you should. It's really as good as they say.This is a good bit of public relations that Square Enix could use right now. The company is publishing the latest game in the series, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided on February 23, but it promoted it with a convoluted pre-order scheme that caused such an uproar, Square Enix eventually canceled it entirely.
