This Piano Simulator Seems Dumb But Is Actually Super Fun

Touch Pianist lets you play songs using your touch screen or the keys on your computer keyboard.

Whether you've always wanted to play the piano but could never stick to lessons, or you just need a meditative mid-afternoon work break, this new web app is a solid outlet.

Touch Pianist allows you to tap out classical tunes using just your keyboard or touch screen. It was created by Batuhan Bozkurt, a Turkey-based musician, sound engineer and creative coder. The app came out today.

The automatic tutorial on the web page features Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, but click through the menu and you can play Chopin, Debussy, Mozart, Bach, and more. You can also download it for free from the iTunes App Store for your tablet or iPhone.

If you're familiar with the classical songs you can tap them out correctly to the rhythm and hear the song the way it was composed (you can't actually control the notes being played, however). Or you can tap quickly and create a Rachmaninoff remix; the site doesn't keep score.

"The user is free to perform the music in any way they wish," the website says. "The premise is that it is really fun to perform a piece you know well, exactly like you feel it with so little effort."

There is something incredibly cathartic about pretending to be a pianist from the comfort of your laptop. You can try it for yourself and embrace your inner Mozart by visiting the website here.
