Watch Club Penguin’s Heartbreaking Final Moments Before Disney Pulled the Plug

RIP iceberg and all

Even if you haven't played Club Penguin in a decade, it was oddly comforting knowing that you could always log into the online kids' game and ask someone "a/s/l" from behind the anonymity of a chubby penguin avatar. Sadly, that is no longer the case. Last night, Club Penguin shut down for good, after Disney pulled the plug in favor of a new mobile game.

As Disney's massive multiplayer chat room went offline forever at midnight, penguins gathered in a show of beautiful solidarity. Club Penguin launched in 2005 intended for ages 6-14 and saw over 200 million penguins created during its run. In its final moments, a flurry of heart emoji, horn toots, and messages of love and farewells flooded screens. Players recorded this moment for future generations to look back upon.

As midnight struck, players waited for the inevitable prompt: "The connection has been lost." It was as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.

Club Penguin Island, the mobile-only replacement of the 12-year-old game, is already up and running. We'll never again be able to return to that igloo for an "I've Been Delayed" concert, but that damn song will live on in our hearts forever. Waddle on, everyone.
