Watch This Trailer: Ridley Scott's Aliens are Back in "Prometheus"

Is there anyone out there who isn’t excited for Prometheus? Is there anyone out there who is hoping against hope that Ridley Scott has reclaimed his sci-fi throne in order to bless us with a bountiful return to the genre that defined him and that he in turn arguably helped to define? Is there anyone out there who hasn’t fallen to their knees and begged for sweet sweet respite from the cartoonish and deplorable franchise that the Aliens of Alien and Predators of Predator have become? Friends, it is my belief that Ridley Scott has heard our cries and from the darkness that once birthed the best in sci-fi terror, from a space that in which no one can hear us scream, he has gracefully created for us, Prometheus.

With his blessing we have also been assaulted with a bevy of viral marketing including the absurdly self important daily countdown teasers to the premier of the actual teaser (not even a trailer!) for the film, and now, this awesome 2023 TED Talk by Peter Wayland (Guy Pearce), who I can only assume is one of the film’s protagonists.

Given how tightlipped everyone involved with the production of Prometheus is, it’s a miracle we know anything at all. Here’s the little bit of plot Fox has allowed to leak:

Ridley Scott, director of Alien and Blade Runner, returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

All I know is that in the teaser we catch a quick glimpse of the famed “Space Jockey”, the giant dead Gigeresque alien being from the first Alien film doing something… So, like most people on the internet, I figure this has something to do with that world in some capacity. Another obvious nod to franchise and its fans is the way the title appears which is very similar to the animation of the Alien title. Awesome.

Back to the TED talk . Can I get some love for Guy Pearce? He’s been regularly killing it since the days of LA Confidential for me, and I personally don’t think he’s in nearly enough quality movies. His super dramatic presentation in this trailer is totally in keeping with most TED talks I’ve seen. Second, the fact that TED talks have apparently become the slickest (note: I didn’t think it was possible for them to get any more slick than they already are) most popular event in the world is pretty much in keeping with the rising presence of the brand. It’s also in keeping that TED would sell out so hard and allow this thing to be made with their branding all over it. Finally, love the small detail of having a Tweetstream, or some kind of 2023 equivalent running in the background.
