Watch This Twisted Short Sci-Fi Film From the Director of 'District 9'

We were once mankind.

Alien megastructures: check.
Pain and suffering: check.
Mind hacking: check.
Humanity fighting back: check.

In May, District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp teased us with a trailer for his new series of wild science fiction short films dubbed Oats Volume One.

Now, the first 20-minute short film has been released, and Blomkamp's creepy sci-fi psyche has never looked so twisted.

"Maybe it's pointless to fight: this is the point of the film," Blomkamp told Motherboard in an interview. "I want us to think about what our freedom urge is worth, what our self-preservation drive is doing to us—and why both can drive us."

The first short, Rakka, opens with the story of an invaded Earth, under siege by some pissed off alien lizard race called the Klum. They start building breeding houses for humans, induce a catastrophic climate change, and start controlling the minds of their victims by hacking into their brains.

It's a perverse future that builds upon Blomkamp's credentials in bringing together politics, aliens, and the darker side of humanity seen in his previous films. While available to watch for free on YouTube, head to Steam to buy the complete Oats Studios Volume One assets, including concept art, scripts, and 3D models.
