Notre Dame Comes Back to Win After Malik Zaire's Gruesome Ankle Injury

Malik Zaire was having a good game before he left with a gross ankle injury, but the Irish came back to win anyway.

Notre Dame's Malik Zaire went down with a pretty gnarly looking ankle injury in the final minute of the third quarter, just minutes before throwing a 59-yard bomb to Will Fuller. Even though first-and-10 with seven minutes left in the third quarter doesn't necessarily scream "desperate times," Zaire throws a perfect 59-yard strike. Fuller's got a decent head of steam on him, but his final strides are spent giving you some Usain Bolt-like, casual backyard flow feels.

Just six minutes later, though, Zaire's ankle gets crushed below a tackle, and the QB was consequently carted back to the locker room. All Hail Mary prayers are now being redirected toward the Heisman-candidate's ankle. With Zaire out, UVA was able to hang around and eventually connected on huge a 35-yard pass on third-and-15 to get to the Irish one-yard line with just about two minutes left in the game. They then punched it in on a one-yard rushing touchdown, but failed to make the two-point conversion, so it remained a 27-26 UVA lead.

As it turns out, the failed two-point conversion didn't matter because ND just drove down the field and won the game on a touchdown anyway. This time is was Zaire's replacement DeShone Kizer hooking up with Fuller for a 25 yard touchdown, and a comeback 34-27 win, ripping the heart out of the home crowd.
