Moullinex's "Take a Chance" Is a Neon-Lit Spaghetti Western

The Portuguese producer clashes classical Western film language with a more bizarre, neon-lit pop universe.

Portuguese musician Moullinex (AKA Luis Clara Gomes) lives in Munich these days, but he decided to return to his native country's sunny beaches to film the video for "Take a Chance," the first single from his second album Elsewhere.

Shot along the cliffs of Cabo Espichel, south of Lisbon, "Take a Chance" was inspired by a dream that director Silvio Teixeira once had about an arguing couple. "The video was intended to be a clash between serious classical Western film language and a more bizarre, neon-lit pop universe," Gomes tells THUMP. The song itself is based upon a feeling that Gomes is haunted by "whenever something great is happening—like nostalgia for something that is still happening."

Elsewhere is similarly based on a sense of in-betweenness. Gomes says he thinks of the album as a dream journal, "a collection of dreams we have when we sleep, but also those we spend our lives chasing." Ultimately, it's a portrait of our generation, one that is actively trying to reclaim a sense of childhood wonder: "an uncontrollable desire to dance and jump around when we're happy, to cry when we're hurt, and to tell everyone we're in love."

Elsewhere is out May 18/19 on Discotexas/!K7. Pre-order it here.
