College Runner Finishes Race After Total Rupture of Her Achilles

Shelby Erdahl ended her college career by powering through a ruptured Achilles tendon to cross the finish line.

This is pretty badass. Last Saturday, Idaho State senior Shelby Erdahl was running in the 400m hurdles final at the Big Sky Track and Field Championships when she ruptured her left Achilles tendon. The typically devastating injury happened early on in the event but Erdahl limped her way through the remainder of the race because teams are awarded a point if you at least finish, regardless of place. Unfortunately, Derek Redmond's dad wasn't there to help her, so she had to do it herself.

Ideally, I was trying to score more than one point and place higher up, but I just started running the race and I jumped over the second hurdle and when I landed I just fell on the track and I didn't really know what was going on. I got back up and I couldn't move my foot and it was numb and hurting. I dunno I guess I never really thought about quitting just because I'd worked so hard to get to that point and I just felt like if I didn't finish I'd let not only myself down but my teammates who were cheering me on and the coaches. So I just kinda started running and it went from there. My focus was just on the finish line.

Erdahl said during the race she had some shooting pains up her leg, but the hardest part was not having a working foot. She made due, though, power walking around the course and gingerly stepping over the hurdles as she approached them. Erdahl said the pain really intensified after the race. "As soon as I stopped running," she told an interviewer, "that's when it felt like my calf was ripping in half." Her teammates and opponents were waiting for her at the finish line, where they carried her off.

Idaho State came in tenth place at the Championships, some 80 points behind first, but Erdahl was able to end her career crossing the finish line.
