When music has the power guide its listener past this mortal coil and into some dark, unknown void of obscurity, it’s creator has got to be on to something. The latest release by Brooklyn-based synth guru, Dan Lopatin accomplishes just that. Replica, Lopatin’s sixth longplayer released under the Oneohtrix Point Never moniker, combines warm, disintegrating bursts of reticent samples with stark, often lazy, melodies. These warring tone clusters whirl together and create some hypnotic hybrid of jazz and drone music—it’s a 10-stop imaginative journey, twisting through time and genre, that’s not to be missed.Last year Motherboard visited Lopatin’s former home studio in Bushwick.
