The Youmi Adware That Plagued iOS Apps Also Affects Android

The adware is able to secretly access users' private information.

Earlier this week, Apple removed a load of apps from its App Store that apparently violated the company's user privacy guidelines. Now, it appears that the same advertising software development kit that led lead to those problems is also being used to create Android apps, according to cybersecurity company Symantec.

"Analysis of the Android variant of Youmi […] flagged it as a potentially unwanted application since it performed a range of actions that could compromise the user's privacy," the company writes.

Youmi apparently siphons a whole wad of private information from a user's Android device. That includes its GPS and cell tower location, unique identifiers for the phone such as the IMEI number, and the phone number.

This differs somewhat to the data that affected Apple apps were stealing, which included a list of all apps installed on the device, and the Apple ID email address linked to the device.

Android's Youmi was also found to be downloading new applications, according to Symantec.
