Oscilloscopes use a single point of light moving quickly across the screen to display voltage waves – crucial to the worlds of electronics, science and medicine. But with the right input, they can be used to draw other shapes too.

To make a video for the Born Ruffians’ song “What to Say,” director Jared Raab shot and edited video of the band, and with the help of artist/computer programmer Rob Bairos, converted the video into vector images (using a live visuals program called TouchDesigner) to display it on the analog machine. Though “reprogramming” oscilloscopes isn’t new, the “video to scope” process used here – somewhat like rotoscoping – is a first, as far as I know. Jared has also posted a making-of video here, which you should watch because you care.
