Made In A Minute: Austin Brown

Growing up in the Jackson family, and more.

Everyone has their own expectations to live up to, but it's safe to say Austin Brown has a tougher act to follow: He's part of the newest generation of the Jackson family, as his mother Rebbie was the eldest sister of Michael, Janet, Jermaine, and the whole crew. Not that he's daunted by the prospect of striking out on his own. "My DNA is Jackson but my name is Austin Brown," he says. "That is who I am and the music that I make is real and it's from the heart, and we're going to keep on getting better."

Obviously, you'd expect that getting an education in the music industry from the King of Pop was anything to complain about. "My mom and Michael really taught me how to dance," he says. "Going on the road with him, watching him, I would dance with him for hours and just kind of freestyle and pop and groove and hear a beat. I just want to go into it and not think about it. That's it." Moving forward, Brown reveals that his uncle continued to giving him advice as the years wore on. "Michael used to tell me this himself, that you've got to do something for yourself," he says. "Make it your own. Make your own vibe. Make your own sound."

After learning from his family to keep pushing as hard as possible, Brown's taking inspiration from wherever he can as his career goes forth. He intends to make his newest album in New York, citing the range of diversity as a clear appeal. "I love the inspiration here, so what I plan on getting is growth in a city like this because you're around so many people all bunched in together," he says. "There's so much influence, so much organic art that's happening whether you're a painter, a jazz musician. There's art everywhere, and you can't replace that. It's beautiful." Someone from such a family has good experience with recognizing that.
