Smokin' Hot Bands Alert: The Skids & 58008

The two Melbourne bands are making waves with their punchy (and hot) punk rock.

The Skids are a cruisey Melbourne punk rock band. It may be 2017 but the four-piece sound like a deep cut from four decades ago. With the denim lovin', raspy ratbag Alex "Zeke" Streich on vocals, the killer rhythm section in Sophie Kahl and Joel Carey (who are also madly in love which makes things extra groovy), and the blues-punk shredding machine Stephanie Crase on the gat, The Skids rock hard.

They may be one of the nicest bands you're going to meet but on stage they are intimidatingly great.

58008 – yes, like the calculator trick, only don't be calling them Boobs –  are a super new punk band who after only a few shows are already seriously badass. Consisting of members of local heroes Yarbles, Peak Twins and Masses, 58008 are experienced enough to create 10/10 fast, furious and futuristic punk smash hits.

We caught up with the Skids' Sophie Kahl and Freya Adele from 58008 for a yarn about their wicked bands and some other stuff.

Noisey: Tell us about your wicked band and why you rock your audiences' socks off?

Sophie: The Skids have been around for about year or so but we haven't played that many giggies. As far as rocking socks off, we'll see what we can do.

Freya: It all started when Ruby and I got drunk on a Monday and realised Cathy is the best front person and that we wanted to start a silly punk band with Cathy as the front person. Then Liam came along.

Do you have any current or upcoming recordings people can check?

Sophie: We have a soundcloud with a couple of tracks. We are all pretty excited about our 7-inch that is coming out soonish on new label Shipping Steel Records.

Freya: We are recording very soon with the demo to be released on No Patience records. Stay tuned.

What are some other musical/other creative projects you've been a part of before?

Sophie: Steph is Summer Flake and is also in Fair Maiden. Joel is in Peak Twins and was in Lindsey Lowhand as well as hip-hop trio Silly Joel and the Candymen. I do the famous JUS zine, and Zeke has a cat called Goose which takes up a lot of his spare time.

Freya: There are so many I don't know where to start. I play in Theta, Ruby is in Yarbles too, Liam is in Bitch Prefect, Peak Twins and Cathy gets around with Ubik and Masses.

What do you get up to when you're not busy being on-stage?

Sophie: I like to keep up with the Kardashians and also hang out at The All Nations Park dog scene (highly recommend) everyone is really friendly and the dogs and puppies are cute as. There is this one guy who is kind of like the unofficial leader and he knows all of the dogs names and they love him. If you go there, you will know who I mean!

Freya: We have a yum time. Karaoke mostly.

The Skids

What is your favourite drink to order at the pub?

Sophie: An Aperol spritz or probably an ice water – I'm a big hydrator

Freya: BM (Bloody Mary)

Who are your current fave Melbourne bands?

Sophie: Rabid Dogs are amazing. You'd never guess they are a new band because they are so tight. 58008 obviously. Nellie has so much attitude and I'm in awe of her. I really respect how productive they are.

Freya: We love our own band because we mostly only love ourselves and each other

And your ideal easter egg?

Sophie: I'd like to go on record and say that Lindt gold bunnies are overrated and not delish. My fave would probs be a crème egg - the goo is yummy

Freya: Mine is the crème egg also.
