‘Playthings’ Is a Trippy VR Playground Where Instruments Are Made of Candy

I want to go to there.

Generally, you can sort me into the VR skeptics camp—I appreciate the technology, but don't find it all that personally appealing just yet. But then I watched this musical virtual reality playground.

Called Playthings, this VR jamming experience was developed by George Michael Brower, formerly of Google's Creative Lab and presently of Always & Forever Computer Entertainment.

The player is immersed in a tropical technicolor world, surrounded by junk food items like gummy bears, cheeseburgers and hotdogs that all make different sounds when you hit them with the aid of your handheld controllers. With the aid of some magic golden tongs, the cheeseburgers can be assembled into a drum kit, the hotdogs into a xylophone, and so on.

On the project's website, Brower says this video barely scratches the surface of what Playthings can do. "I have way more ideas for this project than I have time to execute them," he writes. "I want to see entirely new worlds with different themes and sound palettes, the ability to save and modify your own instruments, a billion more rhythm games… hold up actually, brb."

Brower also says he doesn't have any plans for release just yet, but has brought Playthings to several events around New York City, where his studio is located. Hopefully Playthings gets released to a broader audience someday, cause I totally want to drum on some cheeseburgers.
