You Might Have to Start Paying Spotify to Hear Some New Releases, Report Says

Sorry, plebes.

It wasn't long ago that Spotify was fighting tooth and nail to defend its practice of making its library of tunes available to both paid and free users against the unstoppable, immutable force that is Taylor Swift.

Now, Spotify appears ready to let old wounds heal—let bygones be bygones!—by totally caving in. The company is set to begin experimenting with a window of time when certain artists' latest tracks will be available to paid subscribers only, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing "private talks" and people familiar with the matter.

There's no word at the moment on whether Swift will be one of the artists in question, and she hasn't returned to the platform since pulling her entire back catalogue last year. You can find her on Spotify competitor Apple Music, however, which only has paid subscriptions.

Spotify is testing a windowed approach to see how it will affect usage sign-ups, the Wall Street Journal reports. It could also be seen as Spotify's latest olive branch to an industry that has often taken issue with the platform's low pay-outs and freemium model. This month, Spotify began offering users' listening statistics as a free service to artists on the platform.

Whatever the reasoning, at least the message is clear: Sorry, plebes.
