You Can Now Watch Amazon Prime on the Subway

Don’t expect Netflix to follow suit anytime soon.

Amazon just added another perk to its Prime Video selection of movies and TV shows.

Android and iOS users of the Amazon Video app can now download videos that could previously only be streamed over an active internet connection.

Shows available on Amazon Video like Downton Abbey (above), The Good Wife, and Curb Your Enthusiasm can now be downloaded in advance and watched later onboard flights, on the subway, and in other areas with limited or no internet connectivity.

Now of course Amazon was quick to point out that, no, you can't download videos from Netflix for later offline viewing like you can with Prime Video. You likely never will, either, as Netflix has repeatedly said it will not making videos available for offline viewing because of the belief that, soon enough, fast wireless internet will be ubiquitous, thus obviating the need for offline playback. That might be true in the future, particularly if 5G wireless technology becomes as prevalent as Intel would have us believe, but that's cold comfort for people wanting to watch The Americans on the subway.
