Next week, Facebook will start testing a new Messenger feature called "Photo Magic," which crawls through your smartphone's camera roll and identifies you and your friends' faces in your photos, then prompts you to share the images with them via Messenger.

Before you get too worried, the feature is opt-in, meaning you have to expressly give your permission for it to go through and you can choose to disable it. But if you have tag suggestions turned on, you'll still be picked out in your friends' photos. This is the same facial recognition technology Facebook already uses for tag suggestions—it's just asking for access to an additional source.

Facebook is only testing Photo Magic in Australia for now, on both Android and iOS smartphones. Assuming the feature does well, it may be expand to other countries. And though the concept of Photo Magic might creep you out, remember that it's optional, and you can turn off tag suggestions while you're ahead.
