What a Brand-New, Never Before Inhabited Desert Island Looks Like

”Like walking on Mars.”

With little of the world left to explore, being the first person to inhabit a new territory is the ultimate fantasy to some adventurers.

British millionaire Ian Argus Stuart recently got to live that dream. Stuart spent 11 days on Hunga Tonga island, which was created just a few months ago by volcanic activity. He may also be the last person to visit it, because the new island is already sinking back into the ocean.

Situated in the South Pacific way off the coasts of New Zealand and Australia, Hunga Tonga looks like another planet. The still-soft earth collapses beneath Stuart's feet, and the only creatures to keep him company are a flock of incessant seagulls, whose eggs provided most of Stuart's nutrition during his stay.

The video was filmed as a promotion for a travel agency called Docastaway that specializes in offering the "desert island experience." Billing themselves as "the antithesis of mass tourism," Docastaway offers travel packages on remote islands in Indonesia and the Philippines, in either "Adventure Mode" or "Comfort Mode." Both modes offer a high degree of isolation.

It seems that Stuart is such a fan of Docastaway that they now use him in promotional materials, sending him to the most dangerous and remote locations as a sort of guinea pig. Stuart is the quintessential eccentric millionaire; when he first began corresponding with the agency, according to a company rep, "he was writing his emails in capital letters and full of mistakes; no commas, no full stops." He has no fixed address, and constantly moves from place to place, staying in hotels.

Hunga Tonga island is not recommended for travel and will likely be back underwater soon, making it the perfect destination for Stuart and a pretty bold choice for a guy who can't even swim. As for me, I'd prefer it had a bar and an infinity pool.
