Watch the Trailer for the New 'Doom,' Set on Mars

The game returns to the series' roots.

Congratulations: Your ass is going to Mars.

Doom, just revealed at the E3 video game convention, is the newest title in one of the most legendary game series of all time. This time, you're on the red planet with a laser gun. Other than that, everything old is new again.

The last major iteration, Doom 3, came out in 2004, and it pushed graphics cards and scaredy cats to their limits with intense environments and brutal demons. It also didn't allow players to hold a flashlight and a gun at the same time, visibility becoming a sort of ongoing joke about the major release.

As we can see in the new footage from Doom, visibility doesn't seem to be an issue. Space station lights and hellfire appear to keep the planet plenty illuminated, but I doubt it'll be much of a comfort. Mars is littered with death, corpses, monsters, and plenty of guns to blast through them. While Doom 3 sought to revolutionize shooters and horror games, this new Doom appears to return to its roots in a dramatic way, focusing on mazes and monsters. There will be multiplayer and there will be mods; just like in the original DOS days, Doom players will be able to craft their own dungeons to fight in.

Doom, formerly known as Doom 4, reportedly suffered from a long and troubled development process. The game's maker, Id Software, scrapped the game and started over in 2011 after three years of work. The announcement yesterday from Id and its parent company partner Bethesda Softworks suggest the game is finally back on track.

Doom is expected to release next year in spring of 2016.
