Verizon Will Charge You $20 More for Your Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan

The company says less than one percent of its customers will be affected by the change.

Verizon Wireless customers who still have unlimited data are about to be charged a little more for the privilege.

The wireless provider will raise the cost of unlimited data by $20 per line per month, bringing the price to $59.99, plus the cost of voice minutes and text messages. While Verizon Wireless stopped offering unlimited data plans to new customers in 2011, it does allow customers who previously subscribed to unlimited data plans to keep them. Less than one percent of its customers are still "grandfathered" into unlimited data plans, the company says.

The rate hike will going into effect with the next contract an unlimited data plan customer signs.

Trying to put a positive spin on the news, Verizon Wireless says that not all customers with unlimited data plans use enough data to actually make the plan worthwhile. Instead, the company says unlimited data plan customers may want to consider moving to one of its recently introduced data plans that offer anywhere from 1GB to 18GB of data per month starting at $30.

T-Mobile and Sprint still offer unlimited data plans to new customers, while AT&T, the second largest wireless provider in the US, does not.
