Tokyo's New Toilet-Tech Exhibit Is About as Creepy as You'd Expect

Ever yearned to be serenaded by a choir of toilets, or to slide into a giant potty dressed as a turd? Well good news, weirdo: Tokyo’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, nicknamed Miraikan, launched its newest exhibit today, and it’s all about the privy.

Called "Toilet!? Human Waste and Earth's Future," the exhibit is a long-overdue love letter to the porcelain god. Ostensibly, the museum is focusing on the history, impact, and future of the toilet, all of which are genuinely fascinating subjects. Improved sanitation and waste disposal has saved countless lives, and the displays about space-based toilets and sustainable waste management give a speculative idea of where toilet tech is headed.

But as shown in this video from ITN News, some of the displays are laudably odd. There is an adorable turd of some kind around every corner, whether it’s a mascot, a cheerful display, or whatever this guy is.

The pièce de résistance is probably the exhibit’s enormous toilet-shaped slide. Visitors are encouraged to don a poop-themed hat before sliding into a simulated pipe, filled with visions of fellow pinched loaves beginning their journey to the sewers.

The choir of anthropomorphic toilets is second only to the slide in terms of the exhibit's attraction. Though I’d definitely recommend staying away from that one positioned second in from the left, front row, with the plus-sign eyes. What the hell is that thing’s game?

Anyway, I’m sure you’ve already bought your tickets. But don't shit a brick if you haven't, because the “Toilet!?” exhibition runs through October 5.
