This Is Why You Think Hot People Are Jerks

Looks can't actually kill.

Hot people being assholes is an age-old adage. But this video by educational YouTube channel AsapScience debunks the myth that attractive people are disproportionately jerks by explaining how your own perception may tweak reality.

Imagine a graph that measures the relationship of niceness to good looks. According to the video, everyone should be equally distributed along this graph, meaning there are ugly mean people, ugly nice people, beautiful mean people, and beautiful nice people. Of course, this is mostly subjective to begin with.

But it's not that easy. You probably have no interest in dating, or even talking to someone, who is both mean and ugly. So by eliminating the bottom left quarter of the graph, automatically, it might seem like 100 percent of all the people you aren't physically attracted to are nice. That brings down the average of nice people's looks, in your perception, since the unattractive jerks have been eliminated.

That may also make it seem like nearly half the attractive people out there are also jerks. And as for the nice beautiful people, those hot tokens may get swept off the market fairly quickly, only adding to the seeming phenomenon that good looking people are jerks.

But this all circles back to who you're even paying attention to. It's not that the majority of good looking people are jerks, but it might be that you're ignoring the nice attractive people who are off the market, or the mean unattractive people who will undoubtedly stay in the market forever and ever.
