This 'Fallout: New Vegas' Mod Looks Like an Entirely New Game

Upcoming total conversion mod will have realistic weather effects, vehicular combat, and more.

So maybeFallout 4 wasn't your bag, or maybe you're just hungry for more post apocalyptic wastelands where the world has gone to hell (and don't have the patience to wait for the real thing). This winter you'll likely be able to jump into a sprawling total conversion mod for Bethesda Softworks' Fallout: New Vegas called The Frontier that's basically an entirely new game.

The Frontier has been in development for a while, but the team's latest trailer shows off everything they've stuffed into it for the final push. It's certainly ambitious, as it uses assets from the official Fallout 3 and New Vegas settings of Washington, D.C. and Las Vegas to recreate Portland, Oregon as a snowy wasteland. The real attractions, though, are in the details, such as the introduction of tank battles, cold weather that actually hurts you, fires that spread, destructible items, and new creatures.

Total conversion mods are often inspire breathtaking feats of collaboration, and around 50 people were involved in bringing the The Frontier to near-completion. Sometimes, as in the case of Skywind, a mod that seeks to update Bethesda's 2002 RPG Morrowind with the assets from 2011's Skyrim, the size of the project gets away from the developers and the project seemingly gets stalled. Some, though, such as Enderal for Skyrim, actually see public release.

The Frontier still only has an tentative release date of "this winter," but so far it looks as though it might join that proud company.
