This Cyborg Builds Instruments Out of Water: Video

It’s World Water Day and maybe that shouldn’t be all about gloom and doom, no matter how much water-related gloom and doom is currently scratching at civilization’s door. Steve Mann is arguably the world’s first cyborg (though he’ll have to deal with the other first cyborg we’ve interviewed, and Reddit) and that’s awesome, but he also makes musical instruments. One of them is a water-based instrument called the hydraulophone. Currently Mann teaches at the University of Toronto and works on the On the Identity Trail project, parsing the meaning of anonymity and authentication in networked society. Back in 2010, he took Motherboard along on a tour of his wet ‘n’ wild studio.
