There Is a Senator in Kentucky Who Says Mars Is the Same Temperature as Earth

"I will simply point out that I think in academia we all agree that the temperature on Mars is exactly as it is here. Nobody will dispute that." Therefore, climate change doesn't exist.

Kentucky state senator Brandon Smith does not believe that climate change is real, because, he says, Earth is the same temperature as Mars, and there are no coal mines on Mars (that he's aware of).

More specifically, he said, “As you [Energy & Environment Cabinet official] sit there in your chair with your data, we sit up here in ours with our data and our constituents and stuff behind us. I don’t want to get into the debate about climate change, but I will simply point out that I think in academia we all agree that the temperature on Mars is exactly as it is here. Nobody will dispute that. Yet there are no coal mines on Mars. There are no factories on Mars that I’m aware of.”

They in academia, however, will probably disagree with Mr. Smith. The average temperature on Earth is 16˚C, while the average temperature on Mars is -60˚C.

Or perhaps that is too complicated for Mr. Smith. Perhaps he should consider this slide that NASA prepared to educate children about the differences between Earth and Mars. I recommend reading it slowly, Mr. Smith.

Just a friendly reminder that this is a person holds a position of power, making crucial decisions about the future. And that among Republicans, he is the rule, not the exception.
