The Next Witness in The Silk Road Trial Is a Former Heroin Dealer

Michael Duch was arrested in 2013 and pleaded guilty last month.

So far, the testimony in the trial against Ross Ulbricht—the man accused of being the mastermind behind online drug trafficking site Silk Road—has been limited to law enforcement and one of Ulbricht's college buddies. While their testimony has been enlightening to say the least, today we'll get an inside perspective on how the Silk Road operated: a former heroin dealer will be testifying on the stand.

According to court records, Michael Duch was arrested on October 1, 2013 (the same day as Ulbricht) for distribution and possession of more than 100 grams of heroin. He pleaded guilty in December just a few weeks before appearing on the witness list for Ulbricht's trial. The proceedings of Duch's guilty plea were not made public, but it looks a lot like a plea bargain might have been made with the feds.

On the very first day of the trial, the prosecution made reference to the drug dealers who hawked their wares on the anonymous site, saying Ulbricht lured in new dealers who had never sold drugs before, and gave them advice on how to pack orders and manage customers. They also said one of those novice dealers would testify in the case, providing "an inside view of how Silk Road operated."

"The defendant made it possible for this man, who had never sold drugs before in his life, to sell to literally thousands of around the country," prosecutor Timothy Howard told the court.

Duch and Ulbricht weren't the only people arrested in the Silk Road crackdown. Several other alleged drug dealers from around the globe were charged after the site was taken down and at least one was arrested months beforehand and cooperated with the feds to help them with their investigation—though it's noteworthy that this man wasn't also tapped to testify in Ulbricht's case.

And while Ulbricht is accused of being the so-called king pin of the site, three other men who police say were deeply involved in running the site were also arrested and are still awaiting trial behind the spotlight of Ulbricht's case.

Stay tuned for further updates on Duch's testimony after he takes the stand today.
