The Former Beats Music CEO Suddenly Quit Apple

Rogers' departure comes as questions linger about the success of Apple Music.

The Financial Times reported this morning that Ian Rogers, the former CEO of Beats Music, the streaming service that Apple acquired in 2014 as part of its $3 billion acquisition of Beats, has left the company. Rogers was responsible for the online radio strategy of Apple Music, having brought in BBC Radio One DJ Zane Lowe and launching Beats 1, the streaming music service's online radio station.

Apple confirmed Rogers' departure but did not comment further.

Rogers left Apple to work for a European company in an unrelated industry, according to the FT.

Rogers' departure comes two months after the launch of Apple Music, Apple's Spotify-like streaming music service. Exactly how well the service is doing is somewhat unknown, with one research firm earlier this month claiming that nearly half of all people who tried Apple Music had stopped using it. Apple immediately disputed these claims, and instead said that only 21 percent had stopped using the service.

Apple Music launched on June 30 with a three-month free trial. The service will cost $9.99 per month for individuals when the free trial expires.
