Sony’s New Aerosense Drone Is a Noisy, Tiny Jet Plane

And it can wiggle its rudders.

Sony is getting its feet wet in the drone space through its newly-formed Aerosense company, the product of a joint venture with Japanese startup ZMP. Just yesterday, its first jet-like drone prototype has taken flight.

If it wasn't clear, this tiny camera-toting jet plane isn't a consumer product: Sony is marketing this drone to businesses and enterprises with deeper pockets. The company says it'll be able to automate previously manual tasks, like survey aging infrastructure, do imaging, measure out the size of buildings, and so on. ZMP has also partnered with another company to bring driverless taxis to Japan, so this isn't completely uncharted territory for them.

The The Wall Street Journal reports that the drone will be able to carry along 22 pounds and last up to an hour. It'll also be able to reach speeds of up to 66 mph, solidly beating out any quadcopter you can pick up from Amazon, if for some reason you need those speeds.

Sure, you'll have to put on your best Japanese salaryman impression and shell out wads, but can your Amazon copter do this?
