Sony Pictures Releases 'Goosebumps' Movie Trailer

Is it bad good, good bad, or bad bad?

With Hollywood making more and more of an effort to capitalize on 90s nostalgia, it was only a matter of time before it made a Goosebumps movie.

This just-released trailer from Sony Pictures reveals a somewhat Jumanji-like premise. Jack Black plays R.L. Stine, real life author of the Goosebumps series. The fictional Stine keeps all his books locked up, because opening them unleashes the monsters within. The teenage boy next door develops a crush on Stine's daughter, unlocks a book, and from there all hell breaks loose. The boy, his friends, Stine, and his daughter have to join forces to stuff the varied monsters back into their respective books.

Goosebumps, which also had its own immensely popular show on Nickelodeon, was almost brought to the big screen in 1998 by director Tim Burton. Burton eventually backed out because he felt he couldn't do the series proper justice. Columbia acquired the rights in 2008, and the project has been evolving since then, finally slated for release on October 16th.

For those of us who loved Goosebumps, this trailer looks like a somewhat cheeseball adaptation that could nevertheless be a fun trip back. The cast list includes some other notably funny people, including Amy Ryan and Ken Marino, so I'll keep my hopes up.
