Paris Regulators Force Airbnb to Start Collecting Hotel Taxes

Luckily for travelers, it's only about $1 a day.

Airbnb will be collecting tourist taxes on behalf of hosts in Paris, its most popular city, beginning on October 1st.

Parisians renting out their homes to tourists through Airbnb have always been required to collect tourist taxes, but until now, the burden has been on hosts to collect the $0.96 per-night fee from each guest and submit it directly to City Hall. The French government passed a decree earlier this month allowing Airbnb to take on that responsibility.

There are more Airbnb listings in Paris than any other city the company operates in—roughly 50,000—according to a company press release. Although Airbnb has arranged to collect taxes on behalf of its hosts in US cities like San Francisco and Portland, The importance of Parisian patronage to the company makes the move significant.

At the very least, Parisian Airbnb-ers will no longer have to hassle tourists for less than the price of a cup of espresso every evening of their stay.
