MegaBots Wants You to Kickstart Them to Victory Against Japan’s Giant Robot

“The main risk of not doing this project is living in shame, and definitely becoming a national disgrace.”

Would you pay big bucks to watch some giant robots belt each other? Will you do it for Team America?

The creators behind MegaBots, the robot-building company that challenged Japan to a giant robot boxing match, are calling for your donations in a newly announced Kickstarter. This is all to support their match against Suidobashi Heavy Industry, another combat robot manufacturer based in Japan.

MegaBots is looking for $500,000 to add armor plating, boost hydraulics to actually handle that armor, increase their speed, and add some safety components for the person manning the cockpit. And a paint job. That's the most basic upgrade they need, but there's more tiers.

At $1 million, the team will get a balancing system by working with the winning team from the DARPA Robotics Challenge. Balancing a robot while on the field is hard enough, but given that these awkward hunks of metal will be launching fists and possibly other weapons at each other, it'll be hard to imagine the fight would be entertaining if both sides were just one-hit KO-ing each other the entire time.

The team is supported by a number of notable advisers including Xprize, Battlebots, potentially NASA if they get enough money. Win or lose, it'll probably be more entertaining than watching robots fall or, well, do anything but sit around.
