Mario and Yoshi Take On the Death Star in This YouTube Mashup

YouTube channel Dark Pixel has mashed up Star Wars and Mario Kart, possibly two of the world's most crowd-pleasing diversions ever made, in a fun animation that recreates the final battle of Star Wars: A New Hope, the series' first installment.

The cast of Mario Kart is shown racing across the deserts of Tatooine and the snowy terrain of Hoth, Mario in an X-wing and Bowser in a TIE fighter. (Shy Guy flies the Slave I, Boba Fett's ship.) The characters battle each other using the standard Mario Kart power boosts and missiles. One by one, the competitors are eliminated, leaving hero Mario to successfully destroy the Death Star.

Mario is perhaps a predictable choice for the Luke Skywalker analogue, but who else is gonna save the day? Toad?

Dark Pixel is a gaming-focused channel based in Provo, Utah. Their Facebook page says they focus on creating "action-packed YouTube videos of your favorite video games and childhood nostalgia," like this hilarious imagining of what a Tetris movie could look like. Mashing up classic Nintendo and Star Wars is about as maximum childhood nostalgia as you can get, and a lot of work went into it—Dark Pixel says the video took a year for them to make.

Now I'm just bummed this isn't an actual game.
