Happy Friday, Remember This Insane Music Video About DOTA LAN Parties

Nine years ago today, the Swedish electronic artist Basshunter released the single "Vi sitter i ventrilo och spelar DotA," which, for non-Swedes, translates to "We're Sitting in Ventrilo [chat client] Playing Some DoTA."

Between Dota 2, League of Legends, and other multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games, the genre is now easily one of the most popular in the world. All MOBAs are derived from a Warcraft 3 modification called Defense of the Ancients (DotA). Almost a decade ago, before the rise of eSports and DotA imitators, the original was already so popular in Sweden, that someone made a surprisingly popular music video about it.

Even more surprising than the fact that, nine years later, DoTA is still huge among serious gamers is the fact that this borderline-novelty song about the popular video game was actually a minor hit. It didn't chart in the US, but it peaked at number six on the charts in Sweden and number two on the charts in neighboring Finland. The single no doubt owes some of its success to its music video, which is as unusual—if not more unusual—than the song's subject matter.

I don't speak Swedish, but the music video is a visual medium, so I think I've got a pretty good handle on what's going on: disapproving mom (with the voice of God?) tells kids to stop playing video games, kids say "no" and keep playing DoTA, but then decide to take a limousine to the club.

Wait, now there's a LAN party at the club. Now the main kid (the Basshunter?) is also playing a concert at what I think is the club/LAN party. Ok now the same kids from the beginning of the video are back at the mom's house, passed out next to a bunch of energy drinks, so I guess it was all a dream. Or was it?
