Government Investigators Opening Probe into Clinton Emails

Two government officials have requested a Justice Department investigation into whether sensitive government information was relayed through the private email address Hillary Clinton used during her time as Secretary of State.

The New York Times reported Friday the inspectors general asked for the investigation following a June 29 memo that said her account contained "hundreds of potentially classified emails." This revelation comes after Clinton spent months maintaining that none of the emails sent on her personal account contained classified information.

"We have no indication that Secretary Clinton used her personal email account for anything but unclassified purposes," a State Department representative told Motherboard in March, shortly after it emerged that Clinton had used her personal email account for the duration of her time as Secretary of State.

Clinton has previously explained she used her personal account because it was more convenient. Her campaign told the Associated Press on Friday that Clinton "followed appropriate practices in dealing with classified materials."

"Any released emails deemed classified by the administration have been done so after the fact, and not at the time they were transmitted," campaign spokesman Nick Merrill said in a statement.

According to the Times, the Justice Department has not yet decided whether to open an investigation.
