Google Map Maker Is Slowly Reopening After Pranks Shut It Down

Google Map Maker is reopening with more rules after user pranks last year
The prank in question.

Google is reopening its user-submitted map service in select countries after digital pranks shut the app down last year.

Map Maker, which allows anyone to make edits to Google Maps, was suspended in May after a user successfully sneaked an image of an Android robot urinating on an Apple logo into a map of Pakistan. The incident raised questions of how to review user submissions in a way that allows public edits while avoiding rampant dick pics.

Now, users in Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, India, Philippines and Ukraine can begin editing maps again with a few select changes. There will be "Regional Leads" moderating edits by area, making the uploading process slower but better-monitored than before. The company has also suspended the ability to add geometric shapes and edits to the maps.

Google said it will be reintroducing Map Maker to other countries in phases over the next few weeks.
